Product Hunt can launch a startup overnight. It can also be a complete non-event. The difference isn't luck — it's preparation. This is the exact checklist we run for every Product Hunt campaign we manage at Aura Cannon.

There are three phases: the 7–14 days before launch, launch day itself, and the 72 hours after. Most founders only think about launch day. That's the mistake.

Phase 1: Pre-Launch Prep (7–14 Days Before)

The single biggest predictor of Product Hunt success is how much work you do before the clock starts. Community, credibility, and coordination all take time. Here's what to do in the two weeks before your launch:

Your Product Hunt Profile

  • Create or update your Product Hunt account — ensure your profile photo, bio, and website are complete
  • Start engaging with the community: upvote and comment on other launches genuinely
  • Identify a hunter — ideally someone with an existing audience and a track record of successful hunts. A well-followed hunter adds significant credibility.
  • If hunting yourself, ensure your account is active (not brand new) to avoid spam filters

Your Product Listing (Draft Early)

  • Tagline: One sentence, verb-first, specific benefit. "Sell more SaaS with automated follow-ups" beats "The ultimate sales tool."
  • Description: Lead with the problem, then the solution, then the proof. Keep it under 200 words.
  • Gallery images: 4–6 high-quality screenshots. First image is a hero shot — make it instantly understandable at a glance.
  • Video: A 60–90 second demo significantly increases upvote conversion. Record it, don't skip it.
  • Topics/tags: Choose 2–3 accurate topic tags. Relevance beats volume — you want the right people finding you.

Audience Warm-Up

  • Email your existing users / waitlist: "We're launching on Product Hunt on [date]. Would mean a lot if you supported us."
  • Post 2–3 teaser posts on Twitter/LinkedIn in the week before — build anticipation, not just announcement
  • Reach out personally to 20–30 people who you think will genuinely benefit from your product. Personal ask beats mass blast every time.
  • If you have a community (Slack, Discord, newsletter), pre-warm them with behind-the-scenes content in the days leading up

The goal of pre-launch is to have a list of 50+ people who have already committed to supporting you on launch day. When your product goes live, these early upvotes create momentum — Product Hunt's algorithm surfaces products gaining traction in the first few hours.

Phase 2: Launch Day Execution

You go live at 12:01 AM Pacific Time. Product Hunt resets daily. Most activity happens in the first 8 hours. This is where execution matters.

First 2 Hours (Critical)

  • Notify your pre-committed supporters immediately — message your warm list as soon as you go live
  • Post your launch announcement on Twitter and LinkedIn with a direct link to the PH listing
  • Send your launch-day email to your full list — include the PH link prominently
  • Post in your communities (Slack, Discord) — keep the ask personal and specific
  • Add a launch banner or notice to your website and app

Throughout the Day

  • Respond to every comment on your PH listing within minutes. Activity and engagement directly affects ranking.
  • Post updates and milestone shares on social media (e.g., "#1 in [category]!", "100 upvotes — thank you!")
  • Monitor comments for bugs, questions, and press interest — respond professionally and fast
  • Coordinate any influencer posts or press mentions to drop mid-morning Pacific Time (peak PH traffic window)
  • DM your supporters personally to say thank you — it deepens the relationship and sometimes prompts sharing

Do not ask for upvotes directly. Product Hunt penalizes blatant vote solicitation. Frame your asks around "checking out the launch" or "sharing feedback" — not "please upvote."

Phase 3: Post-Launch Follow-Up (Days 1–7)

Most founders disappear after launch day. That's a mistake — the momentum window stays open for days, and how you handle it determines the long-term value of the launch.

72 Hours After Launch

  • Post a "Thank you" recap — your results, key learnings, what's next. This generates a second wave of engagement and shows authenticity.
  • Compile press mentions and shares — reach out to every journalist or creator who covered you to say thanks and offer an exclusive follow-up angle
  • Reach out to top commenters personally — many of your best early users and potential power advocates are in that comment section
  • Add "Featured on Product Hunt" badge to your site — social proof that converts future visitors

Week 1 Retention Push

  • Send a welcome sequence to every new user acquired through PH — segment them separately, they're a high-intent cohort
  • Ask for reviews and feedback immediately — PH users are vocal and often leave detailed feedback if prompted
  • Share user testimonials on social as they come in — it sustains the launch narrative
  • Follow up with any media contacts who reached out during launch — PR interest has a 48-hour window before it cools

The best Product Hunt launches don't just happen on Product Hunt. They happen everywhere at once — social, email, press, and community — all timed to peak together. If you're not sure your launch is coordinated across all those channels, see how Aura Cannon runs Product Hunt campaigns or check your readiness first.
